** = The 'Best Picture' category was not established until the 2nd Academy Awards. The 1st Academy Awards had two different categories to honor the best films of the year: (1) Outstanding Picture (winner = Wings (1927)); and (2) Unique and Artistic Picture (winner = Sunrise (1927)). After that 1st ceremony, the "Unique and Artistic Picture" category was eliminated, and the Academy established that the eliminated 'Outstanding Picture' category/winner would henceforth be considered analogous to the new 'Best Picture' category/winner. However, the "Unique and Artistic Picture" category/winner from the 1st Academy Awards is considered by many Oscar historians to be nearly as prestigious (if not equally as prestiogous) to that year's 'Outstanding Picture' category/winner.
+[LOST FILM] = "The Patriot" (1929) is a lost film and thus is technically not a checkable film on this list.
++<@UCLA> = The only known surviving prints of "East Lynne" (1931) & "The White Parade" (1934) are housed at the UCLA Film Archive in Los Angeles, CA. Due to the rough condition of these surviving prints, neither film has ever been shown on TV, released to video/dvd, nor supposedly copied into a digital format which would be necessary for the film to exist on the internet for streaming, downloading via a torrent, etc. My in depth research indicates that the only known way to currently see either of these films is with an appointment and prior authorization for individual viewing at the UCLA Instructional Media Lab, Powell Library.
# = For the 10 year stretch from the 2012 Oscars (honoring 2011 films) to the 2021 Oscars (honoring 2000 films) - the number of films nominated for best picture was established to be a minimum of 5 and maximum of 10, with nominated films required to earn either 5% of first-place rankings or 5% after an abbreviated variation of the single transferable vote nominating process. Afterward, the 2022 Oscars (honoring 2021 films) reverted back to the same system used for the 2000 & 2001 Oscars (honoring 1999 & 2000 films) when 10 films were nominated for best picture.
Best Picture winner is first title listed for each year.
The first six Academy Awards ceremonies did not honor movies released within a single calendar year (as has been done from the 7th Academy Awards on), but rather the last five months of one year, and the first seven months of the following year. To allow conversion to the current system, the 6th Academy Awards ceremony considered films for a 17 month period.
1st. Academy Awards = 1928 (or 1927-28) = films released between August 1, 1927 - July 31, 1928
2nd Academy Awards = 1929 (or 1928-29) = films released between August 1, 1928 - July 31, 1929
3rd Academy Awards = 1930 (or 1929-30) = films released between August 1, 1929 - July 31, 1930
4th Academy Awards = 1931 (or 1930-31) = films released between August 1, 1930 - July 31, 1931
5th Academy Awards = 1932 (or 1931-32) = films released between August 1, 1931 - July 31, 1932
6th Academy Awards = 1933 (or 1932-33) = films released between August 1, 1932 - December 31, 1933
