NOTE #1 = The following films comprise the "God and Man Trilogy": (1) Through a Glass Darkly (1961); (2) Winter Light (1963); (3) The Silence (1963).
NOTE #2 = The following films comprise "The Magic Lantern Semi-Autobiographical Trilogy": (1) The Best Intentions (1991); (2) Sunday's Children (1992); (3) Private Confessions (1996).
NOTE #3 = "Saraband" (2003) is a sequel to "Scenes From a Marriage".
NOTE #4 = "Stimulantia" (1967) is a Swedish anthology film with contributions from thirteen different directors. Bergman's contribution was the 14 min short titled "Daniel" which was a compilation of 16mm "home movie" footage he had shot several years earlier of his young son Daniel
NOTE #5 = "Harald & Harald" (1996) is a short television play dedicated to the chairman of the Swedish Parliamentary Committee on Cultural Affairs, Ake Gustavsson, and consists of two actors reading out an official government report on cultural policy.
NOTE #6 = Links are provided for each title to a corresponding page for that title on two websites: (1) Ingmar Bergman Foundation; (2) Bergmanorama; which can be accessed by clicking on the "(1)" and "(2)".
......................The "Ingmar Bergman Foundation" website has been reconfigured such that incorporated links no longer work. I will work to fix when I have time.
......................The "Bergmanorama" website is not currently an active website, and although it is unlikely the website will ever be resurrected, I will keep the DEAD LINKS associated with it for the time being.
NOTE #7 = The Bergman film titles included herein are based primarily on those included within the Ingmar Bergman Foundation's website. Titles are not limited to only those films that Bergman directed, but rather all films created within the "Bergman Universe", meaning those he wrote, directed, produced; as well as others created by his repertory company and studio system. Bergman technically retired from directing feature films after 'Fanny and Alexander' to focus on the theatre, although he did continue to occasionally direct films. But for the most part, Bergman left directing chores to other member of his repertory company and studio system. Many of these films directed by others were written by Bergman, and some were semi-autobiographical.
NOTE #8 = Bergman's films tend to blur the line in terms of what is a theatrically released feature film vs. what is a TV mini-series or TV movie. In his later years, Bergman preferred to create films for television, which would then often be released theatrically, and in the case of a TV mini-series, edited significantly to a more theatre friendly length. For this reason, all narrative films are listed together, with the exception of a couple of unique shorts.
NOTE # 9 = To differentiate between the different types of films in terms of how Bergman was involved with the production, an abbreviated notation prepends each title. A key to the abbreviations prepending the movie titles follows:
LEGEND ---> [[=FF=]] = Theatrically Released Feature Length Film (did not premiere on Television)
LEGEND ---> [DOC-F] = Documentary Feature
LEGEND ---> [DOCSh] = Documentary Short
LEGEND ---> [NShort] = Narrative Short
LEGEND ---> [TP===] = Televised Play (televised recording of staged play)
LEGEND ---> [TV===] = TV Movie (never released theatrically)
LEGEND ---> [TV>FF] = TV Movie or Mini-Series also released theatrically
LEGEND ---> [D|W] = Ingmar Bergman Directed & had a Writing credit
LEGEND ---> [D|---] = Ingmar Bergman Directed but did not have a Writing credit
LEGEND ---> [--|W] = Ingmar Bergman did not Direct but had a Writing credit
LEGEND ---> [--|%] = Ingmar Bergman did not Direct, and contributed very little to the writing
LEGEND ---> [prod] = Ingmar Bergman Produced only (did not Direct nor have a Writing credit)
LEGEND ---> [--|---] = Ingmar Bergman had no credit (film was produced within Ingmar Bergman Universe following Bergman's death)
LEGEND ---> (TV=326m) / (FF=188m) = If same title is listed twice and appended in this manner, it means the TV version is 326 minutes long, and the "Feature Film" version is 188 minutes long.
