Bruce Lee died suddenly, and the great movies he was making died with him. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there was one movie he was halfway through making: "The Game of Death."
Here's a brief summary of the plot: Lee plays a famous martial artist/movie star who is fed up with the hype of being a superstar. To get away, he fakes his own death. For some reason, he is forced to fight an evil clan in order to protect his new-found freedom. He goes into the "BADGUY BUILDING" and has to fight a new person every new floor, with the worst badguy at the top floor. Each new floor brings a tougher badguy. Needless to say, he wins.
Here's why it's bad. Bruce Lee died in the middle of the filming; they had only filmed the fight scenes. Thus, when Bruce isn't fighting, he has HUGE sunglasses on because, well, it's not Bruce -- it's some stand-in. Also, when not wearing glasses, the stand-in holds up a CARDBOARD CUTOUT OF BRUCE LEE'S FACE over his own face. Yep, that's right. It's pretty damn cool.
The best part is when Bruce is in the BADGUY BUILDING and fights Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the basketball player. Kareem kicks Bruce in the chest, and his foot print covers his whole torso. Yep, not bad.
Don't expect a good martial arts movie. Expect cool fight scenes intercut with incredibly ghetto filler scenes. If you're in the right mood, this movie's a whole lot of fun.
Response From RinkWorks:
Trivia note: Bruce Lee filmed the fight scenes for this movie in 1972, before he did "Enter the Dragon." He died before he could finish this movie, but in 1978, director Robert Clouse reassembled the surviving cast members and finished the shoot. This movie is also noteworthy as containing the only match between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris on film. That scene was actually an outtake from "The Return of the Dragon," aka "The Way of the Dragon." -- Sam. I thought Lee and Norris fought in one of the "Dragon" movies. Are you saying they didn't include the footage in the original movie it was meant to be in? -- Dave. That's my understanding. The footage was cut from "Return of the Dragon" and resurrected for inclusion here. -- Sam.
